Stained Glass Workshop in Ghesc

Traditional Technique

From 29 to 31 May 2026, the Ghesc Laboratory Village will host a workshop dedicated to the creation of stained glass panels with lead cames, one of the most fascinating and ancient techniques of glassmaking. The workshop will be led by Maria Scarognina, an artisan specialised in artistic glasswork, and will offer participants the opportunity to approach a craft practice that combines manual skill, design, and aesthetic sensitivity.

The course introduces the main stages involved in creating a traditional stained glass panel: from the design of the drawing to glass cutting, from the assembly with lead cames to soldering with tin. Over the three days of the workshop, each participant will have the opportunity to create a small decorative panel, working directly with the tools, materials, and techniques typical of this craft.

Alongside the practical activities, the workshop will include theoretical sessions dedicated to the history of stained glass and the design principles that guide its composition. The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the creative and constructive process, highlighting the relationship between drawing, material, and the role of light in bringing coloured glass surfaces to life.

The tradition of stained glass has very ancient roots. The earliest surviving examples date back to the Romanesque period, but it is in Gothic architecture that this technique reaches its highest expression. Renowned examples such as the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral or the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris testify to the extraordinary ability of this language to transform light into an architectural and narrative element. Over time, this technique has evolved and continues today to offer new expressive possibilities through the interplay of glass, colour, and light.

The workshop is open to everyone and no previous experience in glassworking is required. All materials and tools will be provided to participants, allowing them to focus on direct experience and the exploration of traditional craft techniques.

The workshop will take place from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 May 2026, with sessions from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00, at the Ghesc Laboratory Village (Montecrestese, VB, Italy).
The maximum number of participants is six, in order to ensure close guidance and careful support throughout all stages of the making process.

The participation fee is €590 per person and includes all necessary materials and a light lunch during the workshop days. Accommodation is not included. To confirm registration, a deposit of €250 is required. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 10 days before the start of the course.

The course will be held in Italian.
