18–19–20 June 2026 | Ghesc, the Living Laboratory Village
Registration is now open for the Hands-on Dry Stone Terracing Workshop, a free three-day experience dedicated to the understanding, maintenance, and reconstruction of the dry stone retaining walls that shape the historic Alpine landscape.
The workshop will take place in the Ghesc Village Laboratory, in the heart of Italy’s Ossola Valley, where for more than twenty years the Fondazione Canova has been promoting educational activities and hands-on projects focused on the conservation of traditional built heritage.
Throughout the workshop, participants will be directly involved in a real restoration site, learning the fundamental techniques of dry stone construction: from stone selection and handling to foundation preparation, wall construction, and the proper interlocking of stone elements. Practical activities will be complemented by discussions on the historical, environmental, and cultural significance of Alpine terraced landscapes.
The workshop aims to transmit practical knowledge and technical skills through a learning-by-doing approach, allowing participants to actively contribute to the preservation of a heritage that embodies centuries of interaction between local communities and their environment.
The course is open to students, professionals, landowners, enthusiasts of traditional architecture, hikers, and anyone interested in discovering and practicing the techniques of dry stone construction.
